I have a question. do i race in open with the wasp all covered up and tbh unless Steve doesn't turn up or have an issue the best placed will be 2nd or run the wasp in part faired and mix it up with Burrows and co?

part of me wants to just go as fast as i can but i also like racing so its a difficult choice.

Tricky!
Maybe have a look at Mike's (and Andrew's) average speeds from last year and see how you're likely to get on with it part-faired...

Many have tried to catch Slash but alas he is a bit quick!
Howard was getting close a couple of years ago and is back in the country now of course... So that could be fun...

I see the mind of a master tactician at work. Remember that racing part-faired also earns you points in fully-faired (Open) class, but not vice versa. Also only your top eight results in each class count in the final Championship placings.

So, for example, you could start the season part-faired and see how it goes. If you are regularly way out in front then move up to fully-faired and you won't have lost anything, or not much - you'll have been scoring Open points anyway. Or you may be enjoying racing with us part- and unfaireds so much that you want to stay.

Or you could start fully-faired and just go for it. Last season 2nd and 3rd place in Open class were won by unfaired and part-faired bikes from Burrows Corp and next year there's going to be at least one more so there's still lots of racing to be had.

i think you credit me with too much thought going into this. Though i didn't realise that about the categories.

Have got the avg speeds from the races so will see how confortable i am holding that pace at the track near me. Though its a velodrome so will match to speeds at a race at another Velo.

Will also calculate % difference between myself and Steve/Mike/Andrew to see how far out of each cat i am and which is closer.

either way looking forward to getting stuck in at the races this year and will try to make a few more rounds to score a reasonable brace of points whatever

So the scores on the doors...

At Hillingdon i was about 10% or 2.6mph avg behind Steve so the question is can this be made up?

I was about 5 - 7% ahead of Mike, AndrewS so would that equate to the fairing and bag I wonder?

Hmmm.. Still no clearer. Time to get out to the track I think

Alternative is I shrink myself by about 10% so i can fit in a beano and make it a fair fight, in fact if i just dislocate one shoulder that should do it :-)

Ah - but how much would that have changed if you had been riding in a group with Mike and Andrew?

I have experience in shortening collar bones if that helps - it reduces shoulder width and moves shoulders forward more  - should be ideal Wink

Sadly the days when I used to ride in a group with MikeB are long gone. My main aim now is to avoid being lapped.

Yet another variable to consider is the circuit: some tracks are very speed-unfriendly, notably Stourport, Shrewsbury and Curborough. I even managed to beat Slash at Stourport last year, riding unfaired. However the Comp Sec has seen fit to leave all three out of the calendar this year... Confused.

So go faired young man, at least for 2014.

So - decision made.

Just spent a couple of hours lapping Reading velodrome and a couple of interesting things came up.

1) With the tailbox i can hold 25mph fairly comfortably but flat out really hurts to get it up much quicker but starting and stopping is  a doddle as i can hand start easily and quickly
2) with the front fairing on its a bit quicker but not much 26 - 27mph
3) bagged up it will hold 28 - 30mph lap after lap but makes starting a bit trickier and i have to faff with the zips to close it up.
4) taking the bit of foam off from behind my head (it came loose as it was pulled when i had to lean out to hand start making the bag pull down and breaking the glue join) makes it about 1 - 2mph slower (not scientific) and therefore this will be stuck back on a bit better.

The bit of foam also acts as a nice little head rest and makes it more comfortable too - though still not "that" comfortable.

Bagged up and with the 20inch wheels i can (just about) hand start so that sorts out the starting.
Stopping is the same as before by dropping the feet through the bottom as its tricky to get the zips open and over the bars to give clearance to reach the floor - note to self need gorilla arms :-). so less faffing and falling over hopefully to get away from the line quicker.

It still looks tatty and will be a permanent tuft test and bits of it are flapping about all over the place but goes pretty well and i will add a little screen to the front to try to marginally improve the aero

So open it is for 2014 :-)

Only thing is i think next time i will take my upright to do some side by side comparisons
