At last there may soon be something better than the trusty old Stelvio/Durano for 406-size wheels: Schwalbe are about to produce a 406 version of their fastest race tyre, the Ultremo ZX:
They've been talking about it for years but this looks like it might actually be about to happen. No-one seems to be selling it yet but Wiggle were pretty quick with the 650C ZX when it came out. |

Only in boring black though
![]() . Shame they don't do it in ETRTO 349 though - Fiona's race bike is really hurting for tyre clearance at the front. Anyone know of a 349 tyre 28mm wide or less? The Stelvio is discontinued.Edited by GeoffBird - 04 October 2011 at 12:13pm |

I bought some new old stock Stelvio lights at the Moulton weekend for £5 each you are welcome to one at that price just PM me. I'm currently using 400 size wheels (i.e. 6mm smaller than 406's) with Primo Champion 19mm tyres http://www.urbanair.co.uk/bmx-wheels/tyres/rims/tyres/primo-champion-18-x-1-race-tyres/prod_1343.html. With the lower profile of the tyre they even just fit in 60's moultons. Practically impossible to get hold of the Sun rims though unless you have a friend in US or Canada. But they roll nicely and make a really super light wheel. The radius to outside of tyre is 220mm if you want to check for clearance on Fiona's bike

I'd have thought there might be more than a little interest from some people here in the 540 (Kingcycle rear) too!

I've got a couple of spare Stelvios Andy, but I'll have one of those, but only if it's surplus. Next season would be fine. I've only got about 205mm radius to spare but thanks for your gratifyingly obscure solution
Never heard of 400's before. It doesn't help that BMX shops rarely tell you ETRTO sizes (or indeed, rim widths).

Ok will put your name on one and bring along next season. Bizzarely the 400x19mm primo tyres also fit on old Sturmey archer 18x 1 3/8" steel rims from 70's raleigh girls bikes. They look quite cool on them as they spread out and become low profile tyres. I did my fastest 10 mile TT of the season using a steel rear rim!

Thanks for the offer Howard. I'm a bit concerned about the shelf-life of any stockpiles, especially as a racing tyre might last a couple of seasons, although judging by your lean angles at Hillingdon Howard, you must get through a set in a race or two! How long will a tyre last without perishing? Is it better to keep them in a centrally-heated house or a cooler garage?

Tyres are better stored at cooler temps and in the dark, as UV light degrades them.
