Maybe it should be called "Fun" class or something... |
I think racers in all classes are in it mainly for fun - I know I am. In fact, I got my Ratracer precisely because my erstwhile competitors had all moved to low racers and were too fast for me whilst I was too fast for the rest of the Sports class, leaving me with nobody to have fun racing head-to-head against.
Whilst we all know that the real purpose of the class was to give Mike Burrows a chance of winning something, from the club's perspective it does act as a remarkably good entry-level class. By this I mean a class for someone who has only one recumbent, i.e. just about all newbies, plus many others who for whatever reason are limited to one. And if you have only one recumbent, it will almost certainly be one that is practical for use on the road.
As for Sports class racing not being serious, does anyone remember Reading 2004?

Oh yes... Mr Burrows and my Bruvver (joined for some of the time by Messrs Hembrow and Gillions) - I remember trying to jump on the back of their train every time they lapped me...

.... and that was when I realised that, barring divine intervention, I
was not going to win the Sports trophy, losing out by 137 points and in
joint second with the redoubtable Mr D. Goodman . The points do not tell the whole story, neither - it was closer than that !!
At least in unfaired I know I'm not going to win before I start

Yup, that's me; and if I ever get as fast as Adrian, then I'll be motivated to buy or build a low racer. In the meantime, I'm really glad that there is a Sports class, and anticipate the competition next season being somewhat fiercer than this
But I wouldn't bother if it wasn't also fun!

Well I think we have established that Sports class is worthwhile,
particularly as a good entry level to the club. The only dispute
on Alan's proposed rules seemed to be the 25mph bit. So how
about we drop that one, agree on the first four and get on with
it.
I presume Hurricanes would qualify? Which is entirely
resonable.
I was taking it quite seriously when NickM came past me at
Eastway but feel a bit better now I see he has been a regular
Time Trialer. So I'm looking forward to some 'fierce' Sports
Class competition next year.

I think somehting like the 'best of six' rule is a good idea - given
the way races are spread over the country and the year it is unlikely
that any but the most dedicated riders could possibly attend all eight,
and unless you were really dramatically faster than the rest of the
field missing a single race would probably put you out of the running.

I'd be quite happy to go along with that. My only concern is that at the moment we are trying to increase funds for the club and reducing the number of races required might well reduce the numbers of racers we see at some events.
Any other thoughts on that one??

This year there were 12 races of which the 'best 8' counted. That already allows for a number of diary clashes, etc throughout the year. So ultimately you are allowed to miss one race in every 3. I think that is reasonable. I also agree with alan that if we reduce the number than that ultimately will mean less people to races - something we cannot really afford.
