I agree with Neil entirely.
Also worth pointing out that we have a new very keen junior racer in Sam Relton, who has come to BHPC from pedal cars. He was at Darley Moor on an ex-Geoff Bird bike and I believe will be at Hillingdon. That's not poaching - just another example of somebody enjoying both variants of our sport. |

Gosh - it is amazing how some fires flare up!!! We deliberately left our charter open to all encouraging all aspects of human power. We do racing which is pretty much inclusive, i.e. we have few rules and more or less anything human powered (I suppose with wheels) can race. That said - there was a human powered hovercraft at the worlds in 2008, and if that was possible to race, we would probably find a way of including it - airships might be more of a problem!
The point is we are inclusive in racing for a very good reason. We would like to produce the ultimate vehicle - a vehicle that is faster than anything else and can be peddled by an incompetent and unfit person (I speak for myself) and still beat everyone. It is the fact that we allow other vehicles in that means that we get true comparisons. If a 'tour-de-france' bike came along and beat everyone (and not just being ridden by a tour-de-france rider, then we would all realise we had gone the wrong way and maybe we should go in a different direction. There are lots of things to learn from the peddle cars - both in terms of construction and also in terms of organisation. I personally would like to keep this forum to the sort of bikes I ride, but I would not like it to be to the exclusion of all other types of bikes. I am sure that is not the case with bpcc and they have their own site for in-depth discussions. It seems to have been genuinely for information. So bottom line, thanks Jes for your contribution. I have yet to come along to a BPCC only event - but maybe I'll make it to the next Blackbushe sometime. We all pedal - some in different ways - let's not fight between us (are we getting like roadies?)

Yes, that's right Jes, but as a first attempt and not really having a clue what I was doing it , while also using cheap but not nescessarily light materials, it ended up strong enough for a 75kg porker to travel at illegal speeds ! Thus was much too heavy for 50kg non athlete to pedal fast for very long, however nothing broke and it steered well, was ultra stable around bends and not at all twitchy running hands off in a straight line. The Mk2 version will be very slimmed down , aiming and on target for 20 kg maximum unladen , I hope to get it ready for the start of next seasons activities.

Tubular Belle? It sticks in my memory as a beautiful machine, very nicely put together. I hope we'll see Mk2 during 2011!
