After reading the rules i see no mention of any specific electrical equipment not being used, after all how many of use use computers, heart rate monitors, GPS and power meters? ok not many the latter...
So i will be ok to use a remote viewing device in a fully faired trike - yes? And if someone says it won't be human powered I will make a generator rig to charge the batteries on a trainer before each race! cheers

My opinion would be it's fine unless it is providing motive force...
There was a discussion about this among the pedal car peeps regarding fitting electric fans in fully-faired cars.
If the air from a fan is vented out the back of the vehicle it could in theory be pushing you along...
But I think a screen is ok. Whether it would give enough peripheral vision or be safe in a race is another question...

If you are using the screen for forward vision I think the visibility question is valid in that is it safe. There is also the problem of picture lag as well - not a big problem when reversing slowly = but you tend to move faster that that Ian. I think it is more doable in a trike (since more stable and not using it for balance). But for installing it with no generator I wouldn't have a problem.

Yanto,
if you are serious considering remote viewing then you shopuld think carefully about the required field of view. You might find that it is just not feasible to use screen(s) for track riding. You might want to try this by simulating the planned FOV on an existing trike. Just a thought. Neil |

Night vision (I know we don't race at night... yet!) goggles also change your depth perception, so be careful of that.
Apart from that, I say go for it. I'll happily ride next to you to test it out (you will have to slow down a lot though)

The general idea is nothing that might be considered assistance so computer and HRM are OK but a fan is not.
Given that some record machines use cameras & screens, they are OK. I would think it is unlikely that a camera-only machine would be considered safe for circuit racing but no reason otherwise. Incidentally the rules on energy storage are very clear, albeit only for transmission related storage; the storage must be empty at the start of the race. So you are perfectly entitled to have an electric drive but the battery must be flat at the beginning of the race and you must charge it through regenerative braking and the like. I suspect that if someone started doing this and started winning that it would be banned but it is technically OK at the moment... Solar power would move the machine out of the realms of Human Power so is a definite no-no. |

Thanks chaps, i think if i was going to go with this method the onus is on me to prove that such a system was safe, by showing that my field of view, depth perception and the system refresh rate was adequate, and in the event of a failure there is a manual fail safe (I could stick my head out and look where i was going), I need to mull this idea over, for a few months anyway, do a bit of investigating before building a new body and purchasing a system !!

Hi Ian
what about a periscope idea as in one of the battle mountain bikes no need to worry about refresh rate just about fogging up and it would be no electrics and cheaper used with side mirrors you could see all around so safer, simples
Jeff.
