Topic: Disk and drum brakes.

Subject: Disk and drum brakes.

I am getting a bit sick and tired of squeaking and rough braking of my disk brakes.
Has anyone replaced disk brakes with drum brakes on a trike.
How practical is it.
I am up for machining backing plates or brackets if needed.

Which trike is it as ICE can supply both on some models so maybe off the shelf replacement, or help with components.

ICE recommend choosing drums if you want low maintenance trouble free operation, also the best aerodynamics. They can supply all the parts if it's one of their trikes. They are very knowledgeable and helpful if you phone or email them.

All the best.

As a matter of interest, all the Velomobiles I've seen have had drum brakes.

It is a Carbontrike. I will be taking the wheels off tomorrow to see what is possible. It is a magnificent trike with a very compliant ride and 100% bombproof mudguards which shrug off the worst weather.
The only downfall are the b....y disk brakes.
Is there anyone out there who could send me some photos of the ICE backing plate so I can see how it is mounted to the cross beam.
Thanks
Mark

I would think all the info you need is available here:  https://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/xl-fd" rel="nofollow - https://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/xl-fd

Ginkgo have a better selection that would suit your trike better. Including nice black ones with shorter restraining arms.  http://shop.ginkgo-veloteile.de/en/Wheel-Accessories/Drum-Brakes/" rel="nofollow - http://shop.ginkgo-veloteile.de/en/Wheel-Accessories/Drum-Brakes/

You need these :-  http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/sd-hubs" rel="nofollow - http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/sd-hubs

These are called Side Drum brakes or SD , they come in:-
both left and right versions
70mm & 90mm sizes.
and either M12 axle or a Q/R mounting.

At a push the axle can simply be a M12 bolt and a lock nut

So it would help if your current wheels have M12 axles and then you need some sort of pin or bolt to anchor the black anti rotation plate.

This is the back of my Python Delta however it shows how they can be mounted [ eventually ]

Quote Hi Paul. The only problem is that his is a carbon fibre trike so it will need a bit more carbon to mount it. It's not as straight forward mounting parts onto carbon fibre as you might think. Needs to be done by someone who knows how the stresses work in carbon fibre materials.

All  the best.
Roy

Hmm even a carbon trike must have a metal axle ?

The poster asked how ICE mount the back plates ? i though all ICE trikes were steel ?

the first link was for the wrong SA hub brakes they had through axles.

SJS sell the parts you need however they are not sold either as complete wheels or a ' kit of parts '

You need to know what you want , so:-
1 x left back plate [ 70mm or 90mm ]
1 x right back plate [ 70mm or 90mm ]
2 x hub shells [ 70mm or 90mm ]
2 x cable adjusters [ the long ones ]
2 x cable end clamps [ fit the actuating arm saddle ]

spokes and rims

back plates could be Q/R then you also need 2 x Q/R spindles

Other option is to get decent calipers. The TRP Spyke mechanical disc calipers are good and easy to fit. For hydraulics, you can't beat Hope. Would be simpler and cheaper than fitting drums maybe?

All I can tell Mark is that ICE mount their disk brakes on a very substantial plate about 15 mm thick. They mount their drum brake retaining plate on a very substantial irregular shaped casting. Mine is on a suspension model though so a non suspension model may be different.
All the best.

Looking at the photos of the Carbon Trikes I notice that they use a similar plate to ICE for mounting their disk brake. If you could mount the drum backing plate to that it would work without any extra stress on the carbon fibre I would have thought. Just my opinion though and I take no responsibility if the trike  breaks. My After 7 drum brake is mounted on an aluminium plate and it has suspension and no rear covering, for better cooling.
All the best.

My thoughts it is already a ' strong point ' on the trike.

However of more concern is what is the current axle diameter ?

SA hubs like a M12 bolt or their own M12 Q/R skewer.

Hi Paul, they make their own lightweight hubs http://www.carbontrikes.com/eng/news.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.carbontrikes.com/eng/news.html  so I think the only way to find out is to ask Mike or contact them or go to their stand at SPEZI. They won't be using standard axles for sure. The weight would be too much. Might be a standard diameter though to fit the ceramic bearings they are using.

All the best
