Thanks to John Lucien I have inherited a KMX trike of some description and although fun to ride is well - a bit slow - compared to my Baron. Its main advantage over the baron is it doesnt fall over and on wet roads fully loaded with work kit in heavy traffic the baron can be a bit of a handful. Once on clear roads its off but wet drain covers still fill me with dread. To that end i have taken the bold and somewhat foolish step of building a body for it. Criteria: 1) The body is of cheap material so if I balls it up hey ho no problem 2) Does not require specialist tooling and can be made in a garage 3) is easy to work and available materials So having seen Sam Knights Black pig and a couple of plywood velomobiles on tinterwap thats what i am doing. After much standing in the garage and staring i have made it as far as cutting out the base and am in the process of looking at supports and mounts to the frame before the hard work of attaching the sides and top begins. But one problem at a time. Hardest bit was working out the wheel cutouts and although a little to big (can fil gaps later) am happy with the outcome. Ooooh - You're right - I can't upload pictures either... We'll kick the hamster that runs round in the little wheel that powers the forum... By the way, Bruvver Dave has just built a plywood tailbox for his Kingcycle which looks very nice. I would upload a picture but...  ------------- |

Hmmmm... Just had a quick look and the settings seem ok - As a member of the BHPC Member group you should be able to post an image as long as it's under 200K and 600x600 I'll escalate this to somebody that knows what they are doing...  ------------- |

Ah! Adrian....you remind me of the little known fact, that in January 1955, The Man who Worked in the Garden, fed up with his downtrodden life and all that Oddle Poddle, fell in love and eloped to Cloud Nine with the luscious Little Weed. Unknown to them both, the ageing Muffin the Mule, had carried a burning pash for Little Weed for yonks. It was the news of this elopement, that sent Muffin into the deep depression that caused him to commit suicide, by diving off Annette's piano and breaking his Main String on impact. I still recall the look of anguish on Muffin's face as he fell silently ...... If only The Man who Worked in the Garden had taken up recumbent riding, rather than juggling earth worms, none of this would have happened. Phew! Back on topic - just! |

Where it all started with the KMX 
Big Chainring  Starting to mark out the frame points  Drawing out the edges  Cut out  Wheel Wells - back was easy front not so much   Next up is the shape of the nose and mounting of the base to the frame - luckily there are many mounting points and a flat bottom on the trike allows for easy bolting too. ------------- Allewedder A2, Broken Optima Baron Lowracer |

Done a bit of work on a wood seat as the original KMX one is for masochists only. Been good as get to practice joining the wood and using my optima seat as a template i know it should be pretty comfy. Have stuck the wood together on the front side with epoxy and am waiting to harden before lifting and repeating on the back and filling any gaps with epoxy/sawdust mix. once solid i will cut to seat shape, sand and glass to finish off.     ------------- Allewedder A2, Broken Optima Baron Lowracer |

Epoxy? I take it your garage is heated, or is that your living room? I would have thought it was too cold for epoxy to harden at the moment.

Quite warm in my garage at the mo. And seemed to harden ok. Few weeks back it was freezing but last night was short sleeves. May stick a little heater in if it gets cold again. ------------- Allewedder A2, Broken Optima Baron Lowracer |

It does need to cure properly, preferably at elevated temperatures. It may seem okay until you leave it in the sun, when it may become like toffee (but not as edible). ------------- Right Time - Right Place - Wrong Speed |

Hi Andy Looking at the photo of the rear wheel slot - make sure to leave enough gap round the rubber tyres that allows for wheel flex. If the tyre is close to the fairing then if going round a corner e.g. at 30mph the wheel flexes and subsequent tyre rub can result in an interesting explosion that results in very exciting sideways travel You may also have seen this beauty of a wooden velo in this blog: https://velomobiel.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow - https://velomobiel.wordpress.com/ Good luck with the building. I concur with Brian having departed backwards into the undergrowth at 30 mph at Lancaster for that very same reason. You don't get a second chance when it happens! I made the wheel slot very wide, then "duck taped" it closed so the tape nearly brushed the tyre, it's amazing when the tape wears as to how much rear wheel deflection there is.

| nope, it depends on how flexible "your" rear end is? You could try having somebody sit in it (same mass and position you will ride in) with the brakes on then push the rear triangle to one side on the rear drop outs, just before the tyre lets go will be the maximum deflection (something break though, not my responsibility). Not very scientific I know |

Pah will crash test dummy testing at reading velodrome once the base is mounted and up and running again ahead of building the bodywork. Rear end is all kmx so overbuilt steel, doesn't seem to flex and with Alan on the slow down for corners anyway 😄 ------------- Allewedder A2, Broken Optima Baron Lowracer |
