There has been some comment that the number of racers has dropped this year so I thought I'd look and see. The table below includes all races since 2008. The three tracks at the bottom of the table in italics have been used only once. I have indicated where extremely inclement weather reduced the numbers and also where the event was part of the Worlds and hence the numbers might be inflated by visitors.

mmm, interesting....over to the statistions...so it seems numbers are down a bit, more than likely part of the ebb and flow of things...I only have a couple of thoughts....

1. 2008 was the year the economy went boom, and so many people found they had less money to 'play' with.

2. Fuel costs are a significantly increased recently...

Also....I am a new member and so far have only made Castle Combe this year (I will be at Hillingdon) So I know nothing....so please discount all of the above....Wacko

Thanks for that Heather - very interesting. It seems the races where numbers have held up best are the 2 day events.

It looks fairly steady overall!

Surprising because it's felt like we've struggled for numbers this year.

Looking at this year's championship tables there doesn't seem to have been much competition in most of the classes - Very few people are going to complete 8 races in any of them.

To my amazement it looks like I'm going to win Sports, finish second in Street and either second or third in Unfaired!!!
So those classes clearly haven't had enough competition... Big smile

Darley Moor is a bit of an odd one... Well down on previous years and we had a group of handcyclists there with us this year.
Maybe now that the straight has been resurfaced people might be tempted back...

Seeing as one of my stated aims on becoming CompSec was to get as many people racing as many times as possible, the season has been something of a disappointment.  From the figures above, it's not as bad as I was thinking, though; if we get 45 - 50 at Hillingdon, we'll be less than 10% down.

Castle Combe was awful, and was the one event where I know of significant numbers of people who turned up but didn't race.  I believe there were other races - Darley Moor is a case in point - which, whilst not severely and directly affected by weather, had pretty lousy weather forecasts, which may have kept people away.

Another thing that may be a factor is that some people who normally ride a "full" (8 races+) season don't seem to have been around much.  I guess if you're out for championship placings and miss too many early-season races then motivation for the later ones might be lacking.

At least one former regular competitor (who shall remain nameless) has stated that he dropped out of the racing this year because of the decision not to allow a competitor who has a mishap in (for example) the slow race to race again in (for example) the fast race...

Personally I think it should be at the discretion of the race organiser and I would never tell somebody who has driven for several hours to get there that they can't have a second go if they want to unless there was a very good reason such as safety concerns...

Minor correction - Jersey 2009 was a standard championship race - the worlds were in 2010 (where there were no BHPC championship races).
