For those who are coming to Newport your mean nasty Competition Secretary has come up with a mean nasty program.

General game plan is:-

11-12 One lappers, pursuits or some such, bike fettling, cheese dancing, lessons in the in-flight shooting of telephone directories etc..

Remainder of time, 12 - 15.30 to be races. Actual length to depend on number of competitors (for peace of mind of scorers 20min tops) but I was thinking to do 2 sets of races with a break in between (~30 minutes), both sets being points scoring with 50% in each race. We pay a lot for the velodrome so might as well get best possible use of it.

See you there

How about a sprint mini championship - individual, 3 laps, last lap timed .....

Looks like we might have a good turnout, and could be fun to run a sprint event for a change. We should have enough time for all who want to flog their guts out for three laps, shouldn't we ?

Just going to check the glue holding in my bottom bracket ....

Could be fun...

I'll have £50 on Mr Chattington.

Probably quite a good way of getting people used to the track and fun in a painful sort of way.

Might be best to do it as pursuits (possibly with more than one starting each side) to make sure as many as possible get a go.

Requires a certain amount of organisationing, getting timers and that sort of thing.

Might do wonders for your racing later though....

Are you volunteering to help organise?

Yeah, I'll give a hand. I'll bring the laptop with the results spreadsheet wot I wrote last year that was quite successful, especially since it seems we're going to have a Several of Events, as Dave would put it ....

Pursuit would be ok, as long as people are careful of each other, esp. getting on and off the track with the high speeds -  no     would be good ...

How about 1 volunteer timer each side with a post it note pad for the recording - time the racer, scribble on pad, stick to racer's forehead. Racer goes find computer geek, gets time put in. Next ! Conveyor belt racing

2 timers, 2 watches, 2 pads, 1 computer geek. We can do that, can't we ?

I'll be happy to help with timing as well...

Surely nobody should be joining the track once the race is underway??

The only time I stopped and rejoined last year was to ask for directions...

No, but it takes a bit to slow down and stop, with a knackered rider too, and the next racer will need to be getting ready somewhere. All I mean is that we must keep the sides (the blue) as clear as possible as well as the track itself.

I would expect quite a few of the racers to be well above 30-35 mph, which is bl**dy quick around a 250 m loop

gNick, do you have car space for a passenger? My term ends on friday and I'd love to see some racing, I'm happy to act as a general dogsbody/lap timer/data entry slave or whatever. I'm assuming getting there requires an obscenely early start...

I'm staying in durham for most of my 'holidays' to do some work but during my free time I'm happy to lend my engineringness (I happen to be rather good at making things as well, I'm happiest when covered in grease, swarf and suds! I'm also looking at getting the CFD bit of solidworks working properly so it could be good for evaluating HPV aerodynamics) to the construction of curious contraptions.

Newport ran well,  Fiona, Pete and Kevin to be thanked for the organising. Kevin particularly for managing to produce printed results on the day! The wonders of modern technology.

Yep,

Thanks for all the efforts. And thanks to the track coach chappie of course...

And Well Done to young Hannah for getting up and racing after falling off...

What a fantastic facility the Newport Velodrome is!!

I can't think of any better place to scare yourself silly...

I'll be having nightmares for years about Howard on his trike above me on that banking. I sort of remember all that centrifugal stuff from the Physics lessons but there was this nagging doubt...

Castle Coombe here we come....

Alan.
