Subject: How not to determine a championship

Suggestions have been made in the past that BHPC should run a points system modelled on that of F1.  I've always opposed that, and it would work against one of my objectives of getting as many people as possible to be having fun HPV racing.  I can't think of an example, either, when the system we've used in recent years has failed to produce the "right" champion.

Now those F1 boys have done http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7948455.stm - this .  Wacko

Needless to say, I won't be thinking of changing to a system that could render a championship all but settled before the season is even half over.

I guess the inference from Bernie is that Hamilton didn't deserve his championship. Anyone who saw Massa v. Hamilton in the rain would beg to differ I think.

All of our champions are fully deserving of their titles of course. Even my Ecclestone-like meddling with the class system didn't work in my favour! Drat

And it's just been announced that Bernie has prevailed and the 2009 Championships will go to the driver with the most wins[1].  Anyone who maintains that this is merely Mr Ecclescake demonstrating a bias towards Ferrari should have the phone number of a good legal representative to hand.  There's a chap called Max Mosley who is said to be quite handy in court.

1 - Massa last year, Sir Stirling in 1958, ect ect

I heard a great line on Radio 4 yesterday:
"If everything seems to be under control, you're not going fast enough"
They were talking about their F1 coverage but we should adopt it as the official BHPC tagline. Much snappier than "Formed to foster all aspects of human powered vehicles.

They have now dropped this ludicrous idea.
Part of the arguement could have been that if someone got a really good start (not out of the question in a year with so many rule changes) then the last 8 rounds of the 17 race championship could be a total waste of time!

If the BPCC had used it last year then I think only 2 cars would have needed to be at the final 2 races of the season which would have been a bit of a bummer seeing as it would have meant we couldn't afford to put the events on in the 1st place!

Can we know use kinetic energy storage devices in line with F1? Evil Smile

Only if you store it as potential energy Geek

Now that's an interesting option - I'm thinking an air tank, lightweight air motor, pedal driven compressor, 3 weeks in front of the telly ....

Training indoors, and a rocketship on the track when I finally get there - what's not to like ? Evil Smile

And F1 has delayed the first past the post system. At least until next year!

To get all serious for a moment, in case anyone should fail to spot the humour in the posts above, have as much fun as you like mentally devising energy storage mechanisms, but if you have stored energy on board your vehicle at the start of a race, you're not Human Powered: it's in http://www.whpva.org/IHPVA/CompRule3.PDF - DA RULES

Though a very strict reading of http://www.whpva.org/IHPVA/CompRule3.PDF - DA RULES  might prohibit it, the convenience of the nearby club house might just lead us to continue to start races at Hog Hill at the top of the hill.

I always thought the  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_rocket - water powered rocket to be the best bet. Not sure how anyone behind you at the start line would feel about it.

I remember Adam Hart-Davis demonstrating that compressed air propelling a jet of water was much more effective at propelling a vehicle than just a jet of compressed air.  But I think Rob is thinking of an air-powered motor.  http://www.instructables.com/id/Air-powered-bicycle./ - It has been done.

But presumably a stored energy device that did NOT contain energy at the start would be legal?

I'm thinking that somebody getting a bit carried away with the old Heinz Baked Beans could be facing a life ban... Big smile

Since wheels are flywheels, it would be hard to ban them...
