Can anyone tell me the CTT rule that prohibits recumbents? I assume there is one, and the ban isn't an urban myth...

I want to ride recumbent, for obvious reasons in local TT

6. Private Time Trials

A private time trial is a ride in an authorised Club, Inter-club or Combined Clubs event where the rider does not qualify to ride. These riders may only compete at the promoter�s discretion and shall not be eligible for any awards.

If it's a quiet event then they aren't likely to mind too much, but approach them about it first. This is how I get out with Stafford Club.
Although it could be argued fairly well that a handcycle is a recumbent, and I doubt any club would want to prevent one of those entering.. especially as they are UCI approved now.

It could also be argued that in these days of steadily declining entries they need all the riders they can get, and that as long as recumbents are not in direct competition with uprights there is no valid reason to turn them away from club, or indeed, open events.

CTT does not recognise UCI rulings on what is an allowable bicycle, as can be seen at events up and down the country throughout the summer! Different sized wheels front and rear, and monocoque frames, are in widespread use in CTT events. So the 1934 UCI ban on recumbents is irrelevant to them, and they can decide at national level, if they wish, to accept competitors on our kind of machine.

Lee, did you get anywhere with your campaign on this issue?

Historical footnote: in 1934, there was a single ride in a CTT (then RTTC) event by a competitor on a recumbent. AG Frost, a classy rider on uprights, decided to try a Mochet Velo Velocar (I think) in a 25 mile time trial, and was not turned away. Unfortunately, he didn't finish, so we don't know how well he would have done; but the Velocar was a hefty machine, so perhaps it wasn't competitive with much lighter uprights except on the track, where it made such an impact. And Frost's was the touring, rather than the racing, version of the machine - much less reclined, as well as heavy. In any case, Rule 14h was introduced fairly swiftly, preventing him from trying again.

I did do a draft motion and I let my local CTT rep have a look at it. The local CTT rep seemed very positive of the idea but apparently many on the national committee are traditionalists. A long standing issue is the use of sleeveless vests which are currently banned and it has been bought up at the AGM for a few years now but is not getting enough votes. For a motion to pass it needs a 2/3 majority vote at the AGM. I have the doc at home, I will post it later. The local rep thought I was too late last year with it and it would be better if we could get more of the local reps on our side before the AGM.
The local guy agreed that he would like to try a 'bent at some point so I will prob let him have a play on some of mine when the better weather comes.

Thanks, that's useful Lee. Only planning to ride 10s, which are reasonably informal. I did the Boxing Day ride without a mention, but then that is a particularly relaxed event. I'll discuss it with the group on their forum and see how I get on.
