Sent a message to the folks running the Derby Spring Sportive just to make sure that our velomobiles would be welcome and received the following unenlightened response forwarded from British Cycling......
"Our Risk assessment and insurance teams have had a look at this and basically It’s got all the parts of a bike, but the weight, profile (bulk) and speed these can reach is a bit of a concern so the current advice is a no to velomobiles in our events."

What Kim said.
Generally wherever you see the British Cycling logo we’re unlikely to be welcome. |

... and Audax UK says "All kinds of human powered vehicles are welcome - including velomobiles. There are usually quite a few on LEL."

Just wrote this to British Cycling:
"Hello James,
I have just been denied entry into the Derby Spring Sportive because I ride a velomobile and PMA tells me that the decision came from British Cycling.
Could I trouble you for the reason, especially given that the motto of British Cycling, emblazoned in large print on your home page is "However You Ride, We're by your side"?
I'm sure that you are aware that every other cycling group welcomes velomobiles - for instance LEL and PBP and RAAM and I'm really curious why British Cycling does not.
I'm really hoping that this is just a misunderstanding.
Thanks very much,
Nicholas Tulloh"

The race track at Snetterton for the charity events run by EACH happily allows velomobiles. You can see an example here:
The thumbnails of the 2019 Snetterton event are here: Edited by atlas_shrugged - 18 February 2024 at 11:01am |
