A friend of mine mentioned to me that there is a recently constructed purpose built outdoor cycle track not very far from me (in Hetton le-Hole nr. Newcastle) complete with indoor changing facilities and very smooth tarmac.

Apparently it's basically similar to eastway in that it has a few hills in it and is about 1.8k long and 5m wide. It is also open to the public and free to use although there is a charge for the changing rooms.

I'm going over tomorrow to check it out as it would be nice to have a few races oop north.

The address of the track is

Hetton Lyons Park, Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton Le Spring Tyne and Wear DH5 0AH
Contact: Details from Stuart Turner, Sunderland Leisure Services, 1-3 Hind Street, Sunderland, SR1 3QD
Tel: 0191 565 7630
Circuit - 1,800 metres
Width - 5 metres

Except it isn't new. We were at an event on its opening quite a few years ago. I gather that some work has been done on it recently though.
The track is dead good but the area and some of the inhabitants is a problem. Last time we were there the local yoof who had been happily talking to us when we were checking the track for broken glass etc. decided to move the hazard tape accross the track and then started laying bricks across it! Also there have been several cases of people having their cars broken into in the carpark.
If we can get together enough marshalls it would make for some very good racing - anyone remember Nigel Leaper snapping a fencepost off after catching the fairing on the floor?

Talking to them, they have the land and are currently applying for planning permission. Assuming all goes through, the facilities will be on line in 2007 or thereabouts.
So nothing going quickly....

the a cycle club is close to getting permission to use the Ford test track at Dunton, Essex for racing - a banked loop of around 1 mile. Concrete surface. It just may,  just may be possible to piggy back on this access. Ok Ford make cars - do we have any issues if I at least check the progress towards access and maybe the club would be interested?

Always worth a try...the difficulty is usually getting weekend access.
