excuse my ignorance about hpv racing, in terms of the hour record what sort of speeds would you be talking about for a faired vehicle, Kilometer sprinters seem to wack round the banking at a fair old lick, are you talking much faster than that?

A bit above 50mph - too fast for a 250m velodrome

Ah but kilometer sprinters are only doing it for a kilometer and not an hour!

The turn doesn't know if you'll be back another 3 times or another 300...

No, but the concentration in keeping the bike down rather than flying out the top, along with the centripetal force in the corners means that an hour would not be realistic.

I've sprinted (well, ok, tried to ...) around a velo and noticed all of the above when you get to 30-35 mph, let alone 50. My stomach didn't like it one bit  , my legs felt like they were twice as heavy as normal, and the bike started to make creaking noises (different ones from usual, before you all chirp up   ) in the corners.

Fun, though !! Can't wait til next time, hopefully with new (better) bike.

Yes I know what you mean even at my humble speeds you can feel g force pulling you down into the banking.

Men's UCI 200m flying start record is 45.3 mph, thats slightly slower than the women's HPV hour record (45.6 mph). As far as I know the fastest hour record done on a 250m velodrome was Ellen's  at about 42 mph (?). She was reported to be at the limit of concentration...

AFAIK all Ellen's hour record attempts have been at Dudenhofen, though Corinne van Noordenne did set a women's hour record of  38.69 miles / 62.26 km on the 250m track in Köln in 2001.

Attempts to lap 250m velodromes at speeds in excess of 70 km/h have been made, but often ended in tears, or at least severe scraping to Vinz Burgherr's very very shiny Birk...

You're right as always, Dave. Apologies to Corinne and Ellen for confusing them.Embarrassed

Here's a velodrome horror story for halloween from Bike Cult (D.B. Perry): A track built in a long narrow building in Berlin in 1949 had corners of just 15m radius that generated 4g in cornering force. The track was rebuilt after 3 riders were killed when their forks collapsed!DeadDeadDead

So if you are planning on going fast at Newport then make sure your bike is strong enough...

According to my admittedly foggy memories of physics, this suggests a speed of 54 mph! Obviously the s****pot's way of committing suicide
