This is a question from a recumbent owner based in Cambridgeshire who wants to know how to remove the wheel in the attached photos. Just from memory this was a Street Machine recumbent.
 
Is this just a question of buying the necessary 5-sided extraction tool and then applying the brake to undo the nut shown in the photo?
 
All tips on obtaining the necessary tool and the wheel removal procedure gratefully accepted.

A Streetmachine with a monoblade seems unlikely, but I digress. It looks very much like the Challenge monoblade sported by Cosimo the Stealth Baron, in which case the owner should on no account use the brake to hold anything in place, because he'll then have to fork out a lot of money for a new brake rotor to replace the one he's just irreparably bent. Remove the brake caliper, then apply the Five-Sided Special Wossname while gripping the wheel with your other three hands was the way I did it. I think Bikefix threw in the Five-Sided Special Wossname when they performed Cosimo's fork transplant, so if yer man hasn’t already got one he may have to contact the fork manufacturer and good luck with that if it's Challenge.

FWIW if you can't find the correct tool, might I suggest that one might be had by laser (or water-jet) cutting from sheet material?    This can be done under subcontract for not much money, provided you are able to supply a CAD dwg of what you want.

Thanks for posting the photos and I've read the replies which are entertaining.

 It is a Challenge Hurricane and currently the front wheel and brake do
 not have any issues - they are working fine. It is just that at some
 point I'll need to remove the thing. It seems that the consensus is
 that it is a horrible invention.

I know many that would look at that issue and ignore it till something breaks so props for your foresight. On the other hand, maybe that would then be the time to upgrade to the latest in bicycle technology trends, the revolutionary new twin bladed fork with a quick release wheel! :-)

Brian, I'm happy to draw up a tool if you know the A/F dimension and depth of the head. It would have to be profile cut from good quality steel I think. I would supply a DXF file. Dave, do you remember how much leverage is required?

FIVE sided! That's a new one!

Colin, you Luddite! Monoblades are great. QR doesn't work well with disc brakes and changing a tube on a monoblade is a delight!
