My Sinister Agents tell me that, among others, Young Master Robert (English) is having a pop at the Hour Record on or near June 30-July 2. He'll be riding Dave Balfour's Varna II. More stuff here:

Jolly good luck to him.
Did the Kingcycle Mango ever make an Hour record attempt? For such a refined bike, it seems to have had surprisingly few outings...

They took it to the Opel track for a play, whereupon Young Master Robert got a bit hyper after over-indulgence in Red Bull and decked it again. At which it fell in a ditch and broke in half. The theory was posited that the crash at Battle Mountain had weakened it somewhat. Edited by legs_larry - 16 May 2006 at 2:19pm |

Rob English has set a new British ONE-HOUR RECORD of 49.84 miles.
By my accounts, this is the 7th fastest one-hour attempt of all-time. The feat was achieved this Friday, June 30 in Casa Grande, Arizona. He rode the Varna II, an older Varna resurrected by Dr. Dave Balfour, which was also ridden to the Womens World 200 meter record last fall in Battle Mountain.
Congratulations Young Master Robert!

Congratulations, Rob!
I like the photo here http://www.veloliner.com/dmn06/63006/index.htm captioned "Rob relaxes after his run"...
...shouldn't that be "Rob is utterly poleaxed after his run"?
Anyway, Rob's own site has a great write-up, which gives considerable insight into what it's like to be inside one of those flying coffins at 50mph... One of the best things about this hobby that it is so very well documented on the Web - a source of endless fascination, always with something new and interesting to read about

Rob E tells me that 50 year old, Fast Freddy Markham did 53.4 miles, which I believe is a new World Record. Is that right Mr Larrington?

That's right, a new world record for Fred Markham at the age of 50. Rob's incredible effort which was 7th earlier in the week, is now 8th. Damjan was averaging 51.4 mph when he went out in the 49th minute for what might have been a new European record. Staying cool was the battle. Here's a new ALL-TIME ONE HOUR LIST (as I see and maintain at http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/wisil/records/Fastest_one_hour2005.htm
2) 52.33 Sam Whittingham, Varna Diablo II, 2004 ,GM/Opel Test Track, Dudenhofen, Germany, WORLD RECORD* 3) 52.01 Sam Whittingham, Varna Diablo II, 2003 Continental Test Track, Uvalde, Texas WORLD RECORD* 4) 51.42 Matt Weaver, Cutting Edge II, 2004 California Speedway, LA, USA US RECORD* 5) 51.33 Lars Teutenberg, WhiteHawk2002 GM/Opel Test Track Dudenhofen, Germany WORLD RECORD* 6) 50.42 Lars Teutenberg, WhiteHawk1999 GM/Opel Test Track Dudenhofen, Germany, WORLD RECORD* 7) 49.96 Bram Moens, M5 #8 fairing, 2003, Ford Test Track, Lommel Belgium DUTCH RECORD* 9) 49.17 Sam Whittingham, Varna, 1998 PMG Test Track, Blaineville, Quebec WORLD RECORD 10) 48.49 Lars Teutenberg, Tomahawk II, 1996 Munich Germany, WORLD RECORD 11) 47.92 Bram Moens, M5 #6 fairing, 1994, RDW Test Track, WORLD RECORD 12) 46.96 Pat Kinch, Kingcycle Bean, 1990, Millbrook Proving Ground WORLD RECORD 13) 46.30 Ron Skarin, Eric Hollander, Vector Tandem, 1980, Ontario Speedway (since torn-down), WORLD RECORD 14) 45.70 Fred Markham, Virtual Rush, 2002, California Speedway, LA, USA Single Rider Record Personal Best 15) 45.61 Rosmarie Büehler, Varna Diablo II, 2004, GM/Opel Test Track Women’s WORLD RECORD 16) 45.36 Fred Markham, Gold Rush, 1989, Michigan Speedway, WORLD RECORD I welcome all additions, amendments to this List.

Mike, If you're interested in national - as well as world - hour records, you might want to include the IHPVA-recognised British Women's record. See: http://www.ihpva.org/PR/PR-british-womens-hour-record.html |

Thank you Adrian. That is a good account of Claire's magnificient ride. In light of the weekend's events I'll be preparing another list soon. I have been seeking all hour runs, whether or not a record, that exceed roughly 30 miles, be they recumbents or UCI bikes. I've tried not to include events on a short track like a velodrome where drafting could have played a significant role in a number of vehicles all breaking 30 mph.
