Southampton University has an ongoing HPV project and is looking for a rider to join the team. Three groups have worked on the current design utilising the Universities wind tunnel and computer software packages. The current vehicle is a tricycle with rear wheel steering and a glass fibre composite aerodynamic fairing. Re-design of the tricycle concept into a bicycle is currently being undertaken, which is a necessity if a record attempt in excess of 80MPH is to be achieved.

Upon manufacture of the new bicycle we intend to compete in national events with the aim of being a strong contender for the speed record by 2009. For this however, we require a rider who will be as committed to the project as we are.

If you are interested in riding for us then please let us know. Visit our website at www.hpv.soton.ac.uk  and if you would like to visit the University and see the project and meet the people involved then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Many thanks,

Southampton University HPV Team

I've posted the link on the pedal cars forum as well because there is at least one regular BPCC team (BSE Racing) based in the Southampton / Ringwood area.

Thank you for placing our link on the Pedal Cars forum.

From the response on Pedal Cars I feel there has been a little confusion over the bike we are aiming to use to potentially reach 80mph. So, just to clear things up for those who took one look at our tricycle and thought ‘Nooooo.... They'll never do it in that!’ here's a little explanation.

The rather large, white, tricycle in the photos is our inherited bike and we fully acknowledge all of its problems. Therefore this isn’t the vehicle that we are requiring a rider for and won’t be used for racing.

We have designs for our new bicycle which is a 2 wheeler and we will be using cutting edge composite technology for its manufacture. It is our new bike that we require a committed rider for, not only so we can manufacture the bike around them but also to help encourage further sponsorship.

While the Varna has a low cross-sectional area we feel that our new design, which is currently being kept under raps, will not only have the required small cross-section but a lower drag coefficient. All we need now is a Sam Whittingham (or similar) to join our team. So if anyone is interested, let us know.

We hope to hear from some of you.

If only I were 15 years younger, 8 inches shorter and lived 200 miles closer ... I would still be the better part of 50% short of the power output needed to reach those sort of speeds .

My serious point is that there probably isn't anyone active on the BHPC racing scene at the moment who is capable of making your machine into a world record breaker (I do hope I'm not getting myself into too much trouble with our current champions...), and to suggest - if you aren't already doing this, and if it's not too heretical for the rest of the Forum - looking in the rather larger pond populated by UCI cyclists for someone powerful enough who might be prepared to lower him/herself to the world of HPVs.  I don't know how he got into HPVs, but it's worth noting, if you didn't know, that Sam Whittingham himself has been an international-standard track cyclist.

On the other hand, Jason Queally and Blueyonder demonstrated quite well that, even if you recruit one of the best engines available, you still need to get the bike right...

Rob English springs immediately to mind...

What's he doing at the moment?

Last I saw of him was at 1st Eastway last year (see picture in Cycling Plus!) and Hayes...

I think he holds the unoffical world speed record for falling off an HPV unassisted by gravity or slipstreaming.  Approx 70mph...

If only I was a bit faster and could comfortably ride a SWB....

I can only do a 27:38 min 10 mile TT,  I assume you want someone who can get under 20 mins?  (although that 27.38 was on a MTB with slicks)

Or maybe if my dad liked 'bents

(he is fast, an ex-pro and current BCF masters national champion)

From his website, he appears to be overwintering somewhere warmer, yet again.  I agree he's the obvious choice among known HPV riders, should he spend long enough in the country.

IIRC, Sam Whittingham's since bagged that record for himself, too.

This occurred to me as well, but I think I saw recently that he and Miles had buried their differences...
