Not quite sure where to put this.  I was just wondering, would it be possible for my local cycling club to run races affiliated with the BHPC?

I am asking this because my local club are running several time trails.  I was told that these events have to be affiliated with a club called the CTT for insurance reasons.  They are also running some tandem events also affiliated with the CTT.  These are strictly speaking separate events but are run at the same time, same day and at the same place.  Unfortunately CTT don't run HPV events (they run them for upright trikes which makes no sense though).  I was wondering if a HPV event could also be run at the same time but be affiliated with BHPC instead?

I don't 100% fully understand all the this red-tape and insurance crap so if I have got my facts wrong, please tell me.

Hi Lee,

All BHPC events are held on closed circuits and so I doubt our insurance would be any good to your club if they are holding time trials on the road.

My former local club ran weekly Time Trials under CTT rules. These rules specifically ban recumbents. However, most Time Trials are held on the public roads and no one can stop you doing a "training ride" on an open public road. So this is what I did, I just happened to start 1 minute after the end of the TT and did the same route. All perfectly legal and you don't have to worry about the CTT rules. The only problem is that you don't have an "official" time as you are not "racing". The local club were happy with this as I think that they were glad to increase their membership (there were only less than a dozen people on the weekly TTs as it was).

My local racing club runs evening TT's in which you can use any bike in the event. The club chairman even wrote to the Scottish Cyclists' Union (Scottish equivilent of CTT) , who said that they have no objection for recumbents to used. However these time trials are restricted to club members and a few guests.
Absolutely no chance of recumbents or HPV's in Scottish open events.

I believe Simon Sanderson had an article in a cycling mag (cycling plus I think) on this subject, I don't have it at hand though.

I find that the posers in my club look down/dismiss my recumbents also dont understand people who ride folders, or even bikes with panniers. Who would want to carry lugggage for goodness sake?
The other folk who have done more than just athletic cycling are more friendly and open.
I do remember the time when the late Stevie Donaldson was riding his Kingcycle Wasp  and met a former Scottish 25m TT Champion who said to Steve those things aren't very good on hills. Steve proceeded to drop the chap on a local hill and left totally behind.
