The 10 minute race was a great idea, short enough for a faster pace but long enough for a little bit of tactics as well, a good mix indeed!

The whole day was run very well, I know I said I'd help and then didn't but a very tight tyre, overly large inner tube didn't help, then I was too busy investigating the timing system. Poor excuse but next time I will help!

The results seem fine to me which is always good news, thanks for the intro gNick.

I'd like to add my thanks to all those who helped turn an unpromising start into a successful day.  Thanks to Heather and Andrew for stepping in to lead the organisating, to gNick for - once again - bringing and operating the timing system, and to everyone else who helped out.

Special thanks to John Lucian for the loan of his Blackberry - very useful for finding telephone numbers that might - and in the end did - have someone on the other end on a Sunday morning.

Thanks also to those (Slash + Yanto) who've taken the timing hardware, the other race equipment and the first aid kit for transport to Fowlmead.

Since we had an actual, paper, snail-mailed black-and-white confirmation of the booking, but the people responsible for unlocking are not the people who take the booking, it  may or may not have made any difference had I continued what was until recently my habit of reminding each venue a week before that we're coming.  Even so, that's something I'll start doing for everybody again, and not just the venues (such as Darley Moor and Hillingdon) where bookings are administered by volunteers and 100% by email.

Oh, and the 10-minute race was an interesting and successful variation.  Thumbs Up

Definitely worth considering in the future, particularly on shorter tracks.

Ten minute race was fun and really got the adrenaline going, a good alternative when there isn't time to do individual sprints. Thanks to everyone who helped get the event going. Standing outside a locked gate after a 4 hour drive didn't look promising but in the end turned out to be a great days racing. Results for the slower race all look correct. Timing system worked a treat well done gnick

Mike nabbed me in an unguarded moment to write the event up for the mag.  A couple of things that would help:

  • As usual, I'm sure Mike would appreciate a few pictures.  If you have anything worth inclusion, would you let Mike know via Fraser (known here as "Madman")
  • Either coincidentally or because our press people have been a great job (Thumbs Up), there were two separate journalistic presences.  I spent some time talking to the chap from "The Telegraph" - I'm guessing the Scunthorpe Telegraph, not the Daily - whilst also trying not to miss the end of the 10-minute race.  I didn't get to talk to the woman who I believe was also a journalist.  Does anyone know where she was from and what sort of piece she was working on.

Helen was the woman. She is a student from Lincoln doing a masters in environmental journalism. She contacted enquiries at BHPC (me) having seen the website and I suggested she come along and talk to Howard and Dave. I know she also talked to Mike. I couldn't spend much time with her unfortunately and I'm not sure what the output will be. Howard and Dave might have more insight. I have her e-mail if we want to get in touch.
