Is the road bike cable disc brake choice still between Spyre and BB7 or is there a better newcomer (e.g. Yokozuna, Pauls)? Between the two, my preference is for the balanced operation of the Spyre, rather than flexing the disc, but I am willing to be convinced.

Cost isn’t really a consideration. Cable-to-hydraulic is possible, if it is still reliable when baking hot or as the miles add up.

TRP Spyre (road - drop bar levers) and Spyke (mtb - flat bar levers) (different pull ratios) are both very good when set up with matching discs, levers and, crucially, compressionless housing.
A gravel riding forum I’m also on highly recommend the juin tech f1’s, which are 4-pot cable to hydraulic numbers. They are very expensive mind.

I don’t like disc brakes that only operate one piston and bend the disc. Having said that the bb7 works well on the front wheel of the Nocom, but they were really bad on my Boardman mountain bike

Thanks, there seem to be three similar Juin Tech calipers - R1 = post mount, F1 = flat mount, X1 = flashier with nicer seals.

if you haven't considered the following, i recommend upgrading your outer cable to 'non compressible' cable sleeve (kevlar encased),  or some sections of metal tube. a la 'full metal jacket' from avid/Sram.
these will improve feel and efficiency.

also consider rotor size and pad type.
I found this video informative:

Its life jim, but not as we know it.

I have put a good few Juin Tech calipers on various bikes for other people and they have always worked very well. I stick to BB7s on a couple of mine because 1. I'm too lazy to change them 2. I'm too tight to spend the money. Mostly, if not all 2. when I come to think about it
Bream no longer. I'll ride anything, slowly

+1 for this.

Back to the original question: I've always like Avid's BB7R. Fully adjustable on both pads, tolerant of poor weather and poorer maintenance, and not too pricey. Oh, and they also stop reasonably well! Wink

I had Magura hydraulic rim brakes on my Kingcycle for 25 years and they were never serviced and never let me down. Not sure on the mileage but I think it was about 25,000 miles as I was riding other bikes as well.

All the best.
