The Mango will probably be Kevin Brown's, he's a blues guitarist, spends the winters in India, and if it is him yes it's e-assist.
A new velomobile rider in the area has a DfXL, he's contemplating going e-assist. I honestly think e-assist has great merit for people who would benefit, like yourself by the sounds of it, but also it's good to read that you can give it some welly on the flat. Castle Combe from distant memory can be busy, but the track is wide and long and so there is never a problem with jostling, even when there's a chain gang going! Unfortunately I have no words of wisdom about the brake situation for you.

If I can't get the front brake sorted with a narrower rim brake caliper, I think I'll build a wheel with a modified Sturmey Archer hub brake, which would be a nice little engineering project.

My Hurricane has undergone a transformation during my recent holiday in NL and it's now ready to hit the road again. I've used a rear wheel with a SRAM S7 gear hub from a Roland add+bike tag-along kid's bike, and the front wheel with a SRAM i-motion hub dynamo comes from a "proper" children's bike. The lights are Busch + Müller and come from marktplaats.nl. The tires are used 40-406 Schwalbe Marathons that I had lying around. I would have preferred using the 50-406 Big Apples that I also had, but even the Marathon barely fits under the crown of the front fork. I have plenty of 406 forks laying around that work with Big Apples, but unfortunately none of them have Magura hydraulic rim brake mounts, and I haven't made time to modify one because I didn't want to spend my whole holiday just working on this bike. I combined the remaining kid's bike parts into a new tag-along bike that I gave to my youngest nephew, and I managed to sell the original rear wheel to offset some of the cost.
I've shortened the handlebars as much as possible and when I fold the tiller onto the seat by removing the height adjustment bolt, the bike fits nicely in the back of my Saab 96 (rear seat folded flat of course). Apart from 'real' folding bikes, I've never managed to fit a bike in it without disassembling handlebars, wheels etc. At some point I want to weld a new luggage rack that works a bit better with the Radical Backbone bag (that doubles as a rucksack) that I was kindly given by a chap from the Dutch forum; the original Challenge rack is a tad narrow. I've never really been a fan of Hurricanes, but all in all I'm happy with how this one's turned out, and it can stay for now. ![]() I've replaced the 40-406 Schwalbe Marathon (front) and 50-406 Big Apple (rear) tyres on my Stinger with 32-406 Continental Contact Urbans. What a revelation! Not only has this resulted in a ±10% speed increase, but they’ve also made the ride much more comfortable. Tyre technology has come a long way during the past two decades! My M5 Low Racer is now for sale if anyone's interested. It will be replaced with a green 406/559 pre-Optima Baron that I'm currently building. Pics to follow when I get a chance to take it to the track! My red Baron is also pre-Optima (built by Dries Baron), but with 451/622 wheels. Later this year, a black Optima 406/559 Baron will be added to the fleet. I love the red one, and it will be very interesting to see how the others compare. The red one now has a much nicer cockpit without the ugly brifters spoiling my view. The fairing still needs some nice new graphics, not sure what I'll do with it yet. ![]() ![]() Edited by melle - 15 September 2024 at 9:49pm |
