Hi,
I have recently acquired Mr Larrington's [legs-larry otp] Trice XXL.....very much in need of a steering bolt repair, which has been carried out [by the skin of ones teeth].... Anyway, in the process of removing various bits and bobs to make access to the main frame a bit easier, I've encountered a rather strange issue with the axle and the wheel bearings that are very much getting the better of my mechanical knowledge. As you can see from the photos, once the front wheel has been removed, the inner bearing remains on the axle [this happened with both front wheels. This is not an issue as I'm not looking to replace the bearings....but what if I wanted too? I cannot see how either the axle or the wheel bearing is removed? There is no internal allen hex key slot inside the axle and the plug on the kingpin end is just that - a plug? You can see the other end of the axle is visible, but without a means of extraction?? And zero room to use a bearings pulley type extractor thingie. I'm yet to contact ICE, but I wondered if any Trice lovers have seen this before. I'm either missing something blatantly obvious or it's a bit of an odd set up?? Search me......Has anybody encountered this before? [If I can get this up and running, I'm hoping to get over to Hillingdon in April for an outing]

Is the axle threaded into the kingpin assembly with the set screw acting as a locking device to prevent the threaded axle from moving in service? If so, putting a bolt into the outer end of the axle, secured from turning with a nut, might allow you to unscrew the axle with a spanner, now that the set screw isn’t locking the axle in place.

Good thinking batman, that might well be what is going on - although it's an odd design [to my mind anyway], although this is precisely how the replacement steering stud is installed [as was supplied by Mr L]. I wonder if the thread on the right wheel ale is a left-handed thread [like the conventional bottom bracket threads], as this would mean they are being tightened as the wheels rotate in a forward direction. I'll see if ICE can confirm any of this. Thanks Dave.

So, I opened communication with ICE and they replied very promptly [which was nice], confirming LWaB's theory of axle assembly! They also attached a manual which also went through the procedure. Patrick did suggest that these axles could well be rusted on, so lots of penetrating oil and a set of mole grips might be a good idea!! [He forgot to mention some kind of protective material between the axle and the mole grips, or my preferred choice would be a pair of stilsons.....be careful!]
As regards the centre steering bolt he didn't have any qualms about drilling through the frame and securing with an M12 nut from underneath. That's for another day!
