The article mentions that steering a Mochet was not easy; the contemporary review in Cycling (reproduced in BHPC magazine #91) stated that the steering ought to have been geared down, rather than direct. Neither writer had had much practice, I imagine...

I would suggest that the real reason that recumbents were not widely adopted in the 1930s was the lack of wide-range gearing then. These early machines were heavy.

That didn't prevent them from being successful on the track, of course - hence the UCI ban.
