With safety at the forefront of a happy race meeting and the likely hood that we will all have a misjudgment of ability at some time elbow pads make good sense, however the Downhill protection available can be a little too bulky for the true aero tuck.

In a recumbent crash, the main cause of damage is abrasion, not impact. A slide at high speed would go straight through those foam pads. My advice to racers would be to look for something with hard plastic caps on the elbow and forearm, such as the pads made by Dainese.

Alan, didn't you get some abrasion resistant shorts after Curborough last year? How are they?

Yep! Fortunately I haven't tested them yet...

Having joined Adrian in the crash test dummy club, expecially last year at Curborough,  I can testify to the value of hard elbow pads and have now crashed twice wearing mountain bike elbow pads - no significant damage to the elbows but other exposed parts have needed first aid.  Anybody who wants to contemplate the effects of a crash can take a look at how abraded my pads are and think about what would have happened without them.
 
Personally hard shell elbow pads are an essential part of my race kit.
 
Sorry but we have no photo's to match Adrian's - not that anybody needs to see what Fiona had to.
