I found that it's much easier to pump my tubeless tyres with a gas cartridge than with a pump. But I also found that the manufacturers use a gas that immediately leaks out so fast that it's half gone by the next day and they tell you to let their Co2 gas out and repump the tyre with air thus making it more difficult than using a pump in the first place!!
So looking at what racing cars use I found that they use Nitrogen. Does anyone know if it's possible to get Nitrogen in those little 16g cylinders with a suitable thread? What do the pro bike teams do? I can buy large cylinders of Nitrogen locally very cheaply. £17.42 for 2 litres at 200 bar at 15C. All the best. Roy Edited by RoyMacdonald - 12 June 2022 at 7:56pm |

Thanks but they don't have a thread that the the Co2 tools need. Have found this though. http://www.prestacycle.com/product/prestaflator-pro-bicycle-tire-inflator-presta-schrader-air-compressor-tool/ All the best. Roy Edited by RoyMacdonald - 12 June 2022 at 10:04pm |

I use one of those with a Stanley AirBoss compressor (unpleasantly loud portable thing that's fine for tyres and blowing dust out of things). The Prestaflator is extremely well made. My only complaint is that the washer for the angled quick Presta head (which they seem to have changed the design of) is a weird size and consumable. The combination certainly works for rapid inflation of bike tyres, which works well for tubeless.

Thanks Kim. Where did you buy your Prestaflator from? I'm too lightweight to use a pump comfortably at the higher pressures sufficient to seat the tyres, hence I was looking at using a cylinder of compressed gas. Don't really care what kind as long as it's not Co2. (why put that gas in those little cylinders when it's not fit for purpose?) I do have a compressor already and I could try that first. It won't fit on directly as the valve is too big to go between the spokes of the After 7. I like the suggestion of using Helium from L-L, as I could amuse the Grandchildren at the same time. I've seen Prestaflator for £59.99 from gonebikingmad.uk All the best. Roy Edited by RoyMacdonald - 13 June 2022 at 12:13pm |

I can't remember where I bought it, but it would have been pre-Brexit, when there was a lot more choice for places to buy cycling stuff.
Originally I used it with an Aldi compressor with no reservoir, but that developed a leak so I replaced it with the Stanley. It works well for tyre inflation and blasting fluff out of computer equipment. I believe the CO2 cartridges pre-dated people using them to inflate tyres. They're also used for powering paintball guns and model aircraft and things, where it doesn't really matter what the gas is, as long as it's cheap, safe and has a sensible vapour pressure. CO2's absolutely fine for re-inflating a bike tyre quickly to finish a ride, after all. The assumption was that you'd be using a track pump to put air in them under normal circumstances, so the solubility of carbon dioxide in butyl rubber would only be a minor inconvenience. Unfortunately, tubeless tyres were invented, and for a cyclist they're the obvious source of a lot of gas in a hurry...

Hi Kim
Seems like there's a business opportunity here, marketing a tyre friendly gas in those little cylinders the inflators use. There is already a big market base I would have thought, among cyclists who don't appreciate pumping up their tyres twice. All the best. Roy Edited by RoyMacdonald - 13 June 2022 at 3:03pm |

My oh my. Just pumped up the tubeless tyres again using the pump with a pressure tank on and when you only weigh 100 lb it is so hard to get 130 psi into the tank! Leaping in the air to throw more weight onto the pump. Covered in sweat, heart pounding, IBS triggered! Ordering the Prestaflator.
