I'm trying to find a way of attaching multiple rear lights to a recumbent. My recumbent has a rear rack. The lights have the usual rubber strip or Cateye-style slot-in clamping systems (clamp attaches to the handlebar, then the light slips into a dedicated slot on the clamp).

One way that may be quite effective would be to attach a length of handlebar tubing to the rear rack.

Does anyone know a reliable  way of doing that though?

Possibly using some form of clamping system that would hold the 10mm rear rack tubing at 90 degrees or parallel to the added handlebar tube? It can be parallel or perpendicular tot he rack tubing because the rack has left-right and fore-aft aligned tubes.

Googling around it looks as though clamping 10mm rack tubing to 25mm handlebar tubing might be a challenge.

Yours in hope...

Hi there

handle bars are for err hands ? so big heavy and strong ?

those lights will also clip to some flat bar [ bought @ B&Q ] and can be held with a black cable tie if a bit more security is needed ?

I welded the 2 verticals only because there was no rack nearby to hang the flat bar on.

regards Paul

Various sources of inspiration here: https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=72509.0

Broom handle off-cuts seem to be a popular bodge for rack-mounting light brackets intended for seatposts.

If your rack has a reflector/light mount at the rear (50mm/65mm/80mm bolt spacing) Cateye do a couple of different adaptor brackets to enable you to fit their lights, like this or SJS Cycles sell a couple of helpful mounts that can be attached in various places, have look at 'Problem Solvers Front Rack Light Mount' or 'M-Wave Wheel Skewer Light Mount' (sorry can't get the links to work for these), these can be added to the end of quick release skewers or anywhere where there's a bolt / hole.

If you want to go for the cheaper DIY route you can use a cork to increase the diameter of any of the rack tubes so that you can use the standard cateye mounts that you've got.  Drill a hole down through the middle of a cork or a bit of dowel/broom handle the same diameter or slightly smaller than your rack tubes, then cut the cork in two along it's length. You can then sandwich the cork around the rack tube and the light mount will clamp it all nicely in place.

Thanks everyone for those suggestions. I am in awe of Stormbird's lightshow! Very impressive!

The YACF link was very helpful too, and I now have a couple of Madison Universal Light Mounting Kit for Madison Pannier Racks each with a 150-lumen rear LED light, plus a Moon Nebula with a dedicated rack mount too. Nebula is usually used as a standby, in case of battery failure on one of the others.

All in all, plenty of light to be seen by.

I did lose one of the 150-lumen lights once in a particularly fast run on a very rough couple of miles, downhill of course. The light mount was left on the Madison mount tube, but the light had launched itself into the scenery somehow. Haven't quite worked out how to stop that happening again...well apart from going slowly I suppose....

Thanks again - Mike S
